Denpasar, Bali’s largest (arguably only) city only became the capital of Bali in 1958. Although primarily a commercial area where most of Bali’s local businesses are headquartered there are nonethelessa a good many temples, museums and palaces to visit that can be explored on foot. And shopping… this is where the largest market on Bali, Pasar Badung, is located. For those wanting to get to know the locals and what they eat, drink and wear this is a fascinating place. 

Hotels in Denpasar are geared towards the local businessman and are, on the whole, very inexpensive. However amenities are sparse and the nearest beach is in Sanur. But for those who want to be off the beaten track Denpasar  has a lot to offer.
